What is the relationship between the clinical nurse educator and the clinical learning environment?
Clinical nurse educators have the responsibility of enhancing the clinical learning environment to present efficient and competent graduates. This occurs through making good preparation of the environment so that students’ anxiety and fear is reduced thus enabling them to make fewer mistakes within the environment (Farzi, S., Shahriari & Farzi, S., 2018). Additionally, educators are responsible for creating a positive environment that helps students to visualize future success, tailoring the teaching relationship to the learner, being curious about the student and his/her interests, using anecdotes to form closer relationships, creating safe settings to discuss occurrences that include mistakes, and offering clarity concerning mistakes and expectations (Koharchik & Redding, 2016).
What strategies will enhance the relationship?
Strategies to enhance the relationship include ensuring that the clinical nurse educators have adequate clinical expertise, reasonable clinical evaluation is applied, and the environment offers a proportional balance between the number of faculty facilities, educators and students. Besides that, a pleasant atmosphere should be created to include appropriate behavior of educators with students, and ensuring that the students are not neglected so that participants’ willingness to learn and teach is enhanced (Farzi, S., Shahriari & Farzi, S., 2018).
What factors might detract from the relationship?
There are five factors that could detract from the relationship. Firstly, fear of failure and criticism can cause clinical nurse educators to be stressed and make mistakes. Secondly, insufficient readiness of the educators (inadequate mastery of teaching skills and cognitive components of learning, and insufficient self-confidence) that disturb the environment. Thirdly, unpleasant atmosphere of clinical environment from inappropriate behavior of educators as they neglect the environment resulting in reduced willingness to learn and teach (Farzi, S., Shahriari & Farzi, S., 2018).
What are the clinical educator’s responsibilities to the clinical agency:
- regarding students?
They have the responsibility to train students in nursing skills, prepare nursing students for successful change out of academia, empower students to thrive in the nurse profession once they graduate, and improve the systems intended to uphold nursing education. There are five factors that must be considered in selecting clinical experiences. The second factor is clinical supervision that centers on the workload of medical personnel and how it affects their attitudes towards students’ supervision and clinical learning. The third factor is organizational support and resources, with a focus on communication, equipment, procedures, and materials. The fourth factor is teaching and guiding support as offered by preceptors and lecturers. The final factor is clinical stress and anxiety, a psycho-social issue that affects wellbeing and educational process (Gaberson, Oermann & Shellenbarger, 2015). The identified factors relate to planning practicum experiences since the practicum experience is an on-going systematic process.
