Topic 1 DQ 1

Almost all personality research has been conducted in Western, English speaking countries. What impact might this have on the resulting theories?

Re: Topic 1 DQ 1
Psychologists for years have disagreed in how personality research is thought about. Culture plays an important role in how personality is researched. The two cultures include the individualistic and the collectivists approach. Typically people from the western or English speaking countries would be more influenced by the individualistic approach. Therefore, they are most concerned with the individual rather than the group. Therefore, cultures who are collectivists would most likely focus on the group as a whole not just one person. While both cultures have their strengths if personality research is mainly being conducted in western, English speaking countries research will not be the most accurate. It would make theories one sided due to one sided views. For example, someone from the western, English speaking countries could argue that an employee from Wal-Mart working hard and moving up in management is most important. However, someone from South American countries who follow the collectivist approach could argue the company as a whole is the more important than just one employee. In my opinion, research is best done when both sides are able to have their say in order to avoid bias results. PSY 255 Topic 1: Introduction to Personality Psychology
