The difference in theories would cause a difference in opinions as it relates to research. Even though they may have similar beliefs the cultural differences may cause them that have a slight difference of opinions as it relates to research or different results. The impact that almost all personality research has been done in Western English speaking countries has on the resulting theories is that because some countries are focused on individual needs and other countries are focused more on group needs. That would impact the theories on its own. Another impact could be caused by the different cultures and backgrounds. According to our book ” Theory” is where most research begins and it is defined as a general statement about the relationship between constructs and events. If Personality Research mainly focus on Western English speak countries, that research wold have a bias outcome and leaves more room for the study to be questioned and validated as necessary or even useful research. The book also talks about what makes for good research. In order to have good research there has to be two variables present such as the independent ( treatment) variable and the dependent ( outcome) variable. I would think that if you must show the two of these for good research then using the same types of subjects is not only a waste of time and resources ( we already have the answers) it does not represent the majority . Culture alone is one of the biggest part of an individual’s personality. Geographical research does impact theories because personality traits are believed to be formed through patterns in thinking, feeling, and behaving. For instance, take two small medical clinics, one located in a hustling and bustling city in NY and the other located in the country in Oregon. Both clinics hire doctors, with no experience, straight out of medical school. The country doctor who works twenty years in an environment of a slow paced, easy-going, and knows everyone’s first name is going to develop a different personality trait, habits, and a belief system of how medicine should be administered compared to the city doctor. A city doctor, after 20 years, might believe people are just a number, not personable, and is all about selling more pharmaceuticals.
If researchers gave these two doctors a personality study they would probably have completely opposite point of views, reactions, and personality traits. Likewise, when personality research is only conducted in Western countries the results may show personalities to be easy going, generous, and forgiving people who treat others with respect, dignity, and with equal opportunities.
