NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion
Week 1 Discussion
My name is xxx. I am currently enrolled in my first year at Walden University with a major in FNP MSN. I have been a nurse since 2006. Since graduating from The University of Texas and obtaining my RN BSN, I worked in the ER, ICU, Med-Surg, Home health, and finally Dialysis. I currently am a Clinical Manager of an In-Center Hemodialysis clinic in Crockett Texas. I have been in my current position for five years, and I have managed two different clinics. I live and work in East Texas. I completed my MBA in 2020.
My Goals and University Vision and Mission
My personal vision is to leave my community, patients, and society in a better position than I found them. This aligns with Walden’s Vision of immediately solving societal challenges and advancing the greater global good. My mission is to provide support and the highest level of care in my personal and professional life, thereby promoting positive social change. Walden’s Goals for multicontextual educational opportunities, learner-centered education, diverse process-learning approaches, and producing agents of positive social change are similar goals I have for my patient population (Walden University, n.d., 2021). By providing this type of patient education and promoting positive social change through action and example, I can make positive social change happen in my community NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
MSN Program Outcomes and Perspectives to Professional and Academic Goals
The goal for my future is a continuation of my current career goals. I will continue to provide the highest level of care to every patient every day. I have many contacts in my local community. I look forward to partnering with local practitioners to provide clinic based family care to our community with a free clinic option on Saturdays. Achieving my FNP MSN from Walden would allow me to achieve these academic and professional goals. Receiving the highest level of education will give me the best opportunity to give patients the best care NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
Academic and Professional Collaborators for Academic and Professional Success
I will use the knowledge and experience provided by Walden’s instructors, academic advisors, enrolment specialists, the Writing Center, and (most importantly) other students to learn and grow my academic and professional knowledge. I will continue to work with RNs, FNPs, MDs, and other healthcare professionals in my area to further grow my knowledge base specific to our local patient population needs. Many healthcare professionals work together in a common goal to improve patient care.
Concepts for Walden Student Readiness
Time management will be the most important concept for student readiness. Effectively managing my time will allow me to reap the full benefits from Walden’s education program, and not have to limit my time dedicated to my patient. I gained a lot from the Student Readiness Orientation. Knowing how to navigate the home page and Blackboard will limit the learning curve of starting a new program. I now know where resources are located in the event I need them. Working with other healthcare professionals through collaboration in assignments and feedback will help each of us grow as professionals NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
Individuals and Teams in the MSN Program
I will be working with many individuals and teams to achieve my FNP MSN over the next two years. I anticipate I will be hearing from my course instructor and my student teams on this submission in the next few days. I’m sure we are all nervous about our first submission. I want to submit enough information to fulfill the grading rubric, but I also want to remain “brief”. The primary teams and individuals that will help us all through this program are our Instructors, Academic advisors, writing department, Financial Aid, families, professional colleagues, and on and on. This list could go on for pages.
I want to thank you all for your time and energy throughout this process. We can all help each other in our common goal NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.

Discussion: Networking Opportunities
In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.
Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.
To Prepare:
- Review the Walden and College of Nursing mission and vision statements, Walden’s goals and University Outcomes, and the MSN Program Learning Outcomes presented in this Module’s Learning Resources.
- Reflect on your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
- Consider how the information in these resources fit with your own goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.
- Also consider academic and professional individuals and teams with whom you may collaborate in support of your efforts as a student at the university and as a professional within your organization and career.
By Day 3 of Week 1
Post a brief introduction of yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation as to how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Also include an explanation for how the Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
By Day 6 of Week 1
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by suggesting additional individuals and/or teams with whom you wish to collaborate or by offering additional networking strategies.

I enjoyed reading your discussion post and was very impressed by your own personal goal to “leave my community, patients, and society in a better position that I found them”. You could not have said it any better. I believe that we are all in our profession for a reason. That each and everyone of us innately cares about how we leave this world and how much of a impact we can bring to society no matter how big or small. We all have made an impact on people, patients, community and society as nurses. Now we all have the opportunity to make an even bigger impact as we are continuing our education and become Scholar-practitioners.
I agree that during this journey, support from our instructors, academic advisors, writing department, families and professional colleagues will help up succeed through this program. I do have one suggestion to add to your success. I think that joining Family Nurse Practitioner associations or Student NP groups would also benefit as well. Being members of those associations would be a great way to not only network within the associations but would also be kept up to date on CEU opportunities, conferences, policies and laws that may be changing within the field NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
I look forward to collaborating with you in the future. Good luck this quarter!
response 2
I enjoyed reading your post. You have a lot of experience as a nurse in many different specialities, which I am sure has given you a great foundation in your career. It is so wholesome to see how committed you are to your community, with the consideration of providing a free clinic on Saturdays. I can see how underserved communities would deeply benefit from a resource like this, and from a nurse like you! I am from Iowa and lived near The University of Iowa for four years. The University of Iowa has a mobile clinic that provides free care to underserved populations such as “immigrants, refugees, migrant farmworkers, individuals experiencing homelessness, low-income individuals, and people who live in rural communities” (Palma et al., 2020). 44% of the recipients report that this is the only healthcare that they receive, and 97% of recipients report that their quality of care is good or excellent (Palma et al., 2020). With this information, it is clear that you have huge potential to make a great difference in the lives of your patients. I also agree that time management is extremely important as an online student. Many of us are working, managing families, and studying full-time. According to Martin et al., students who participate in online courses benefit from self-discipline and time management to meet deadlines (2020). This will be a learning experience for me, and I am sure that I will have to improve my time management skills over the next two years in order to be successful NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.

A Need for Change
My name is xxxx. I have been in the medical field for 38 years as a nurse. I must say I have an addiction to floor nursing. The down side of this is floor nursing has had a negative effect on my health due to the physical nature of the job. Nursing is everything to me and I do not see myself doing any other profession. So, I decided in order to continue to do the thing I most cherish in my life, I would have to enhance my knowledge by returning to college in order fulfill my dream. I decided to get my Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN). Most of my clinical experiences have been in the field of cardiology and critical care. After much research I found the area of Adult Gerontology Acute Care as a Nurse Practitioner (AGAC-NP). Voila! I immediately knew that was the perfect fit for me.
Why Walden?
One of the reasons I chose Walden was what was written in the School of Nursing’s (SON) mission statement. Walden SON focuses on the scholar-practitioner model. The scholar-practitioner model allows one use the knowledge they possess to enhance their educational goals, in combination with developmental research (Walden 2021 para. 6)I figured that my many years of experience and knowledge would definitely be an asset as I move from novice to expert.
A Walden Promise: Social Change
Walden University promotes social change. When I hear that term I think of the way we as a society interact with one another and the byproduct of those interactions. I wait in anticipation to see the impact Walden will have on my journey towards my contribution with regards to social change. I have been fortunate to have been in this field long enough to see the changes in nursing as it has evolved into an entity that promotes wellness. Back in the day we practiced basic nursing and now it is more of a preventative/health promotional nursing practice. The doctors wrote the orders and the nurses followed them without question. Very little patient education was used and you did not dare give your suggestion to that doctor. Thank God for change. Preventative/health promotional nursing essentially places the responsibility of maintenance care in the hands of the patient. We as nurses are responsible for providing the necessary tools the patient requires to maintain a state of individual wellness. I love nurturing and providing my patients the empowerment of knowledge. I believe this is an example of how social change can be utilized to achieve positive outcomes. Walden uses terms like dignity, individual development, and worth and how imperative they are to the advancement of social change (Walden 2021 para.4). It is like growing a garden. Walden provides the talented professors and positive role models, and we are the seeds. Once watered and nurtured we will bloom into the same if we follow the guidelines set by Walden. And in return we will follow suit and like perennials we have the ability create social change. And so the cycle begins. It’s just my analog NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
A Meeting of the Minds
The University of Walden has three noted “cornerstones” in their mission and vision statement, quality, integrity, and student-centeredness (Walden 2021 para.8). Of the three cornerstones noted one stuck and sealed the deal for me, student-centeredness. Walden stated “it believes that academic programs must be learner-centered, incorporating learners’ prior knowledge and allowing them to focus their academic work on their needs and interests (Walden 2021 para. 11). Again this fits my goals to a tee. This is what we describe in the spiritual realm, as being equally yoked.

Week 1 Main Post
My name is Emelia Korkor, originally from Ghana. I am a mother of three boys. I have been a Registered Nurse for six years and graduated from Shenandoah University. It is worth to state that I have been in the nursing profession for twenty years since I have imparted into the lives of the elderly to celebrate their individualities, the middle age to manage their medications and pain levels and a preceptor to nursing students. I started as a Certified Nurse Assistance (CNA), then pursued to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and currently as a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instructor with both American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
As stated by Education Producer (2018), obtaining a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) allows nursing professionals to pursue careers in focus areas such as neonatal or psychiatric care. This writer however, decided not to return back to school because of financial constrain, time management and changing shift from full time to part time. Surprisingly, I came across the mission statement of Walden University Catalog (2019) “To provide diverse community of career professionals with opportunities to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so they can effect positive social change.” as well as the mission statement of Walden School of Nursing (2011-2012), “for a diverse array of nursing professionals seeking enhancement of critical thinking skills, abilities to select and implement evidence-based practices, and core and specialty nursing knowledge in order to transform society’’. These statements caught my attention as they were in alignment with my thought pattern as I continuously make efforts to improve on my critical skills and to seek knowledge to be responsive to the needs of my patients NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
Further, my goal to pursue MSN program connects with Walden University’s mission, vision, and social change, to become a Mental Health Nurse practitioner who has acquired knowledge, put into practice to benefit the community by providing emotional needs and being able to assess patients progress in an efficient manner.
Lastly, for academic and Professional Success, this writer will make good use of any available resources at her disposal provided by Walden University such as instructors, academic advisors, enrolment specialty and other knowledgeable experienced health professionals including physicians and nurses I am currently working with to gain more knowledge NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.

I enjoyed reading your post and how you have worked your way from a CNA to an LPN, an RN, and a CPR instructor. I tell my daughter, an RN, that nursing is a field of opportunity and growth that you cannot get in some careers. Moving into the MSN program to become a nurse practitioner is a big step, but I am glad you came across Walden’s mission statement, as I did too, and after reading To provide a diverse community of career professionals with opportunities to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so they can effect positive social change.” as well as the mission statement of Walden School of Nursing (2011-2012), “for a diverse array of nursing professionals seeking enhancement of critical thinking skills, abilities to select and implement evidence-based practices, and core and specialty nursing knowledge in order to transform society.” These two essential values and missions aligned with my own, and I contacted Walden that day, which I had not done with any other school as I had been searching. As a senior in high school, did I ever get that chance to have that feeling of when visiting a college campus, “yes, this is it”, but I did get that feeling when I read Walden’s Mission and Values NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion. I took a deep breath and took the next step, and I am so thankful I did. Welcome to class

Week 1 Discussion:
Hello, My Fellow Walden Classmates:
My name is xxx, RN. I have currently enrolled in the RN to MSN with a major in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner through Walden University. I recently completed the bridge classes and excited as this is one of two of my first master program courses. I have been a registered nurse for over 16 years but have been in the nursing field for 26 years. I obtained my ADN through Waukesha County Technical College. As a single mother, this was my best and most affordable option to reach my goal and dream still to be a nurse. I have worked in various nursing areas from medical-surgical, ICU, burn units, local travel, cardiac clinic, and I currently work at a rural family medicine clinic in Baraboo, WI, as a triage and POD RN. I have been in this role for five years NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
My vision is to be an active member of my community to provide the citizens, patients, and society in general in a better position than I found them. This also is within Walden’s Vision of immediately solving societal challenges and advancing the greater global good. My mission is to provide support and give compassion, and the highest level of care in my professional life and personal life. I want to deliver and be a part of positive social change within my community. Walden’s Goals for educational opportunities, learner-centered education, diverse process-learning approaches, and producing positive social change agents are similar goals I have for my patient population (Walden University, n.d., 2021). By giving this type of patient education and promoting positive social change through action, tools, and lead by example, I can make positive societal within my rural community.
In MSN Program Outcomes and Perspectives to Professional and Academic Goals, I have vital goals for my future to continue my career goal of becoming an AGAC NP. I have deep compassion for the nursing profession and currently and in the future to continue to provide the highest level of care to patients and families I encounter every day. Though I have only been in this area of Wisconsin for nine years, I have developed multiple contacts and professional relationships in the community, such as ADRC, Sauk County Health Department, and Nurse-Family Partnership Program.
I look forward to networking further with local practitioners with a primary focus on cardiac and vascular in providing acute care to our community by working in the local hospital to provide quality evidence-based practice care to the patients I care for. Achieving my AGAC MSN from Walden would allow me to achieve these academic and professional goals. Receiving the highest level of education will give me the best opportunity to provide patients the best care.
I will use the knowledge and experience that Walden University provides. I will utilize the provided resources of my academic professors, academic advisors, the Writing Center, and networking with other students to learn and grow within the nurse practitioner profession as I work through the AGAC- NP program for professional academic collaborators for academic and professional success. I will continue to work with RNs, PAs, NPs, MDs, and other healthcare professionals in my work profession and friends to build on my knowledge and gain experience to provide high-quality care to the patients in my small community. Healthcare is a web of teamwork as multidisciplinary professionals work together to provide and improve patient care NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
Time management has always been a concept I struggle with, but I know it is an important concept for students’ success. After being out of school for sixteen years, I struggled with managing and balancing work, home, family, and school life in the first year of classes in the Walden program. As each course began and completed, I felt that time management that eluded me was becoming better and more accessible, and I think I am better. Effectively managing and balancing my time and energy will allow me to learn and take full advantage of Walden’s education program. This will allow me to provide excellent patient care when I reach my goal of being an AGAC-NP. I reviewed the Student Readiness Orientation several times over the last year as I would forget about resources at the click of a mouse key through Walden University. After reviewing the Readiness, my first class helped me with blackboard from the home page and easy navigation to messages, class content, and additional resources such as the writing center (Walden University, n.d., 2021) NURS – 6003N Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing week 1 discussion.
I currently and will continue to work as an individual and part of a team to achieve my career goal of becoming an AGAC- NP; just like in an organization, being a team member and an active participant is essential in the program. We all have strengths and weaknesses and can help each other achieve our end professional and personal goals. I remember the first time I wrote RN after my name and the sense of accomplishment and pride I felt and still do today. The following credentials to write after our names will be exciting and a sense of self-pride. I cannot wait to get to know all of you, and we learn from each other. As reading through the discussion and class café posts, we can offer and help each other. Nursing is a challenging but rewarding field. Still, my favorite quote I have as my screensaver “Nursing is the hardest job you’ll ever love.”
