NURS 6003 Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies and Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies
I have identified the following academic resources and/or strategies that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or my specialty in particular. NURS 6003 Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies and Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
Directions: In the space below Identify and describe at least three academic resources or strategies that can be applied to the MSN program, and at least three professional resources that can be applied to success in the nursing practice in general or your specialty in particular. For each, explain how you intend to use these resources, and how they might benefit you academically and professionally.
Academic Resource/Strategy 1
The first academic strategy that would be beneficial to my specialty as a working professional is the aspect of online learning. The strategy of pursuing my MSN degree through an online platform is one of the best things to have ever happened to me. It is a strategy that allows me to continue working as a registered nurse and to continue earning so that I can take care of myself and my family. It is the realization of the benefits of this strategy that made it possible for me to choose the best university to get my online MSN in the form of Walden University (Walden University, 2020). With a supportive university such as Walden University, getting a postgraduate degree has proven to be enjoyable and adventurous at the same time. This is because the faculty is always there to assist whenever a student has a problem. It does not matter whether the problem is academic in nature or related to the stresses of work-life balance. NURS 6003 Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies and Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics. The faculty and student affairs department are always at hand to guide, direct, motivate, and inspire. The strategy of online learning for the postgraduate degree of MSN is an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone – professional advancement and academic progression.

Academic Resource/Strategy 2
The second is an academic resource in the form of conferences organized by professional nursing organizations. Every year, various professional nursing organizations organize conferences with different pertinent topics for its members. These members are not just practicing nurse professionals, but also students pursuing a specialty related to the organization’s mission. These conferences normally bring together experts and very experienced nurse specialists in the concerned specialty of the professional nursing organization. For instance, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association or APNA will organize annual conferences that bring together practicing psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) as well as MSN and doctorate students in psychiatry and mental health. Also, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or AANP which is the umbrella body of all nurse practitioners organizes conferences with a common theme for all. As stated, the membership is divided into student membership and practicing nurse membership. These conferences are a source of invaluable contemporary practices in the specialty. This is because new research is often presented by experts at these conferences. Also, these conferences are used by members to disseminate evidence-based practice (EBP) recommendations in the form of podium presentations (Brownson et al., 2018). The conferences are therefore an important academic resource for an MSN student. Academic Resource/Strategy 3
The third academic resource beneficial for the MSN student and which I will use for my academic advancement as an MSN student at Walden University is in the form of academic databases. These are electronic research databases full of hundreds of thousands of published peer-reviewed journal articles on a variety of subjects. As an MSN student, this is actually an indispensable resource because a postgraduate student’s work is related mostly to research. Current nursing practice leans towards evidence-based practice or EBP. This means that interventions used by the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) such as the family nurse practitioner (FNP) or the PMHNP must always be backed by scholarly evidence for efficacy. Interventions whose efficacy has not been verified by research are considered as common practice and have been found to lead to unwanted patient outcomes. Because of this, EBP is regarded as best practice. But EBP knowledge grows each day a new efficacious interventions come to light. The way that it grows is through a process referred to as clinical inquiry (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). A crucial stage of clinical inquiry is the search for scholarly evidence from published peer-reviewed literature on the subject. It is this stage that must make use of electronic research databases. Examples of these databases are CINAHL, PubMed, ProQuest, and Cochrane amongst others.
Professional Resource/Strategy 1
Apart from academic resources and strategies for the MSN student, there are also professional strategies and resources. One of these is the strategy of joining a professional nursing organization such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or AANP. This strategy will ensure that I as the APRN am well-placed to benefit from professional development opportunities that are accorded to members by the organization. There is also the value of recognition in these organizations. An example is the Fellowship of the AANP (Rossiter et al., 2017); a prestigious recognition of the work a member has done for the profession either through research, education, or advocacy.
Professional Resource/Strategy 2
The second is a professional resource in the form of the National Council Licensure Examination or NCLEX. This is the certification examination offered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Passing the examination for me will guarantee certification which is an important step towards beginning professional practice as an APRN (NCSBN, n.d.). I will use this resource to strengthen my credentials as an APRN.
Professional Resource/Strategy 3
The third and last professional strategy is the decision to practice in a state with full practice authority (FPA) after qualification, graduation, and certification. FPA states allow the APRN to practice to the fullest extent of their knowledge, training, and skills without undue restrictions. The APRN is given licensure with FPA and full prescriptive authority without the need for a collaborative agreement with a supervising physician. Some of these states with FPA legislative policies are New Mexico, Alaska, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Washington, and Iowa amongst others (AANP, 2020). Adopting this strategy will enable me to derive fulfillment from my practice by avoiding being denied an opportunity to thrive professionally through restrictive state laws. Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below. NURS 6003 Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies and Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
Directions: In the space below craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).
Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
In the space below write a 2- 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:
- Explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing
- Explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics
- Cite at least 2 resources that support your arguments, being sure to use proper APA formatting.
- Use Grammarly and SafeAssign to improve the product.
- Explain how Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity
Academic integrity can be defined as the act of being honest in what one is writing as a student of higher learning. It means putting down only that which is rightfully your idea and not reproducing another person’s thoughts without giving them credit. Writing on the other hand refers to any academic work or assignment given to the postgraduate MSN student to complete. Therefore, the relationship between academic integrity and writing is in the requirement by the institution (in this case Walden University) that the student writes original work that belongs to them (Morris, 2018). Should they borrow any ideas from another scholar or source, academic integrity requires that this information is paraphrased and the source cited accordingly NURS 6003 Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies and Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics. Professional practices are those practices a practicing APRN will engage in during the course of their practice. This includes honesty with the patient and payers in terms of diagnostic and treatment information as well as coded procedures for reimbursement. Scholarly ethics refers to matters such as academic integrity discussed above. The relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics is that an APRN who lacks scholarly ethics such as academic integrity is more likely than not to continue cheating into their professional practice years. If this happens, it may lead to adverse patient outcomes, litigation due to malpractice, and even death of a patent.
Grammarly, SafeAssign, and paraphrasing are three tools that are very useful in enforcing academic integrity. Grammarly helps with correcting grammatical errors but also with checking for plagiarism, which is basically academic dishonesty. On the other hand, SafeAssign is a tool that compares a student’s submitted paper to a database of previously submitted student papers. It will show if there is any significant similarity between the submitted paper and the old paper in the repository (Walden University, 2020). Last but not least, the skill of paraphrasing involves writing down another person’s ideas in your own words while citing the source correctly.
PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
Expand on your thoughts from Part 1 by:
- Identifying and describing strategies you intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of your 1) academic work while a student of the MSN program, and 2) professional work as a nurse throughout your career. Include a review of resources and approaches you propose to use as a student and a professional NURS 6003 Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies and Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics.
The strategy I intend to use to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work as a student at Walden (MSN program) is to balance my hours of work and studies NURS 6003 Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies and Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics. This way, I will not be overwhelmed by school work to the point of being tempted to engage in contract cheating (Morris, 2018). The strategy that I intend to use to maintain integrity and ethics of my professional work as an APRN in my career will be to always be honest with patients and colleagues. This will mean avoiding giving patients false hope and inflating my ability to help them. It will also involve self-reporting when I make an error or mistake while performing clinical tasks alone. This is a patient-centered approach that will also guarantee patient safety.
