The Role of the Nurse in Global Health
Healthcare burden is a common problem to both developed and developing nations due to shortages in healthcare workforce, high costs incurred for the services and minimal coordination of care among others. Germany, in particular, provides services compared to India. However, both nations exhibit a rise in chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease as well as expensive healthcare services such as medical drugs. These diseases are heightened in the nations due to a poorly coordinated health care system coupled with a workforce shortage.
High Chronic Infections
Chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, respiratory diseases and cardiovascular diseases have resulted in 57 million deaths by the year 2008. These diseases have high mortality, morbidity and risk factors in both Germany and India. However, India exhibits high prevalence rates of chronic infections especially non-communicable diseases by 40% in all hospital stay and 30% of outpatients than Germany due to the inadequate facility. India has higher death rates of chronic diseases of 53% and 44% disabilities due to chronic diseases (Khosla, Patel & Sharma, 2012). There has been dwindling shift of the policy makers to prioritize the healthcare sectors to include prevention approaches as well as a low investment on personnel and formal systems towards such infections amidst every increasing population. On the other hand, Germany has lower chronic disease prevalence. High Healthcare Costs
Both India and Germany exhibit high costs in healthcare services in both the public and private entities. Healthcare in Germany contributes to $ 500 every month for the employed and employers while the self-employed patients experience full payment. The same high costs in healthcare service delivery are experienced in India with worse cases of burden due to higher costs. For example, the allopathic services provided in India are expensive which cannot be accessed by the common man coupled with high prices on drugs (Khosla, Patel & Sharma, 2012).
Comparison of the Nations with the USA
Comparisons of the nations with the USA reveal similarities. The countries exhibit high rates of chronic infections, and citizens experience high costs in healthcare coupled with low healthcare professionals. However, German and USA have different coordinated care systems. While the USA face high fragmentation and privatized system in preventive and patient-centered care with no universal access to the healthcare system, Germany has a fairly fragmented system with universal access to the healthcare system. In some cases, the nurses provide uncoordinated healthcare delivery which results in increased healthcare problems (Schoen, et al., 2005). However, these nations have improved healthcare outcome due to proper planning of the limited resources that are channeled towards quality healthcare delivery, proper reorientation of the healthcare system and proper management that are patient centered. Nurses are instrumental in ensuring the provision of quality healthcare delivery at the global level. Conversely, the nurses should deliver high-quality care through the provision of well-coordinated services (Khosla, Patel & Sharma, 2012).
In conclusion, healthcare problems are exhibited in both developed and developing nations especially in Germany and India. Such burdens are also experienced in the USA though the management of such issues varies in these nations. Comparisons of the burden in both nations with the USA reveal similarities with differences regarding quality in healthcare delivery. Germany, in particular, has a higher quality of healthcare delivery at low cost compared to the USA while both countries are superior in care provision compared to India. However, the healthcare burden is exhibited in the three nations due to nurse workforce shortage against the high population especially the old age who need care.
