Objectives, Questions, and Hypotheses

Asking the difference between whether to conduct quantitative or qualitative research is important as it will go on to not only define the nature of the project but also its findings and subsequent conclusions (Gray et al., 2016). Knowing the difference between the two types of research also helps in deciding on which to choose for a specific project; different projects are best suited to different types of research. Evidently, there are significant differences between various aspects of both quantitative and qualitative research. At their core, the difference exists in the types of data which they utilize; quantitative articles rely more on numerical data as qualitative articles focus on textual data. This core difference consequently influences differences in other aspects of the articles. Due to the nature of data in each type of research, the purpose of their hypotheses usually differs NSG-502- Advanced Nursing Research Module IV Discussion Post: Objectives, Questions, and Hypotheses. In quantitative research, the hypothesis is generated to be tested by subsequently collected data. As numerical data is definite, it provides an unambiguous means for testing the hypothesis. Textual data, on the other hand, is mostly open-ended and can generate more ideas and concepts. To this end, hypotheses in qualitative research are used to explore ideas in depth and thus can lead to even more hypotheses as they are being tested by the textual data (Chigbu, 2019). The nature of data for each research also influences their objectives and research questions. Objectives are performance metrics and quantitative objectives are easily measurable as they deal with numerical data. However, qualitative objectives become immeasurable and more subjective as they deal with textual data which are hard to quantify. To the same effect, qualitative research questions are usually subjective, exploratory, and open-ended as they depend more on understanding, experience, and meaning. Quantitative research questions, on the other hand, are numerical-based and seek to establish relationships, comparisons, and descriptions of different variables NSG-502- Advanced Nursing Research Module IV Discussion Post: Objectives, Questions, and Hypotheses.

  • Dr. Fagan
  • Very clear and to the point.  Now it would be a good exercise for you to search for a quantitative research study and a qualitative research study and compare the two in real time.  Thank you.

  •  Qualitative objectives are vast, allowing the researcher more space to express the lived experience. A research study confirms “The researcher must also employ imaginative insight as they attempt to make sense of the data and generate understanding and theory. Design research is also dependent upon the researchers’ creative interpretation of the data.” Maher, C., et al (2018). Qualitative research questions what is the perception of the individual in the certain experience. Only quantitative research method uses a hypothesis. This is because quantitative method utilizes logic.   References<<< Replied to post below >>>

  • The question utilized on quantitative is to explain the relationship between the variables to be studied. This is an example of a research quantitative method study “Here, we quantitatively analyzed the correlations of various chemical properties of coals from thousands of data.” Wang, C., et al (2017).
  • Quantitative objectives are clearly stated in present tense and identifies the specific variable to be studied.
  • I found your explanation to the comparison and contrast on the use of objectives and questions very helpful. Although, explaining the comparison and contrast can be challenging. Due to the same intentions of both methods, it can be difficult to word the differences and similarities. These are the differences that I found on the qualitative research method NSG-502- Advanced Nursing Research Module IV Discussion Post: Objectives, Questions, and Hypotheses.
