Course Description
Utilizes standard financial tools to manage health care organization capital resources. Topics include capital funding,
project management, costing and budgetary methods, capital formation, and infrastructure investment strategies.

Course Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Explain the basic concepts of financial management in health care organizations.
2. Explain and apply the methodology for practical application of financial management procedures in a health care
setting.
3. Explain and illustrate what is necessary for managing short-term and long-term assets and liabilities of health care
firms.
4. Explain and illustrate the similarities and differences among the major approaches to valuation for health care
firms.
5. Distinguish between variable versus fixed costs and direct versus indirect costs for a health service or process.
6. Calculate net present value, internal rate of return, and profitability indexes given assumed cash flows and
discount rates in health care operations.
7. Define and measure total and systematic project risk in health care processes.
8. Compare and contrast the choices for external financing faced by health care organizations.
9. Compare and contrast the relationship between the cost of capital for a not-for-profit healthcare provider and an
equivalent taxable corporation.
10. Discuss and evaluate the basic principles of working capital management as rooted in controlling opportunity
costs in health care firms.
11. Explain and discuss the financial approach to strategic health care planning and how to participate effectively in
that process.
12. Differentiate between change, innovation, and learning within health care organization and cite the tools and
strategies for developing them.
13. Explain organizational performance and the manager’s role in creating high-performance health care
organizations.
14. Discuss the future of individuals and groups within organizations and the managerial role pertaining to future
demands.
Credits
Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit.
Course Structure
1. Unit Learning Objectives: Each unit contains Unit Learning Objectives that specify the measurable skills and
knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit.
2. Written Lectures: Each unit contains a Written Lecture, which discusses lesson material.

3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters in the textbook.
Supplemental Readings are provided in the unit study guides to aid students in their course of study.
4. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): There are non-graded Learning Activities in Units I, II, III, IV, VI, and VII to
aid students in their course of study.
5. Key Terms: Key terms are intended to guide students in their course of study. Students should pay particular
attention to Key Terms as they represent important concepts within the unit material and reading.
6. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are a part of all CSU term courses. Information and specifications
regarding these assignments are provided in the Academic Policies listed in the Course Menu bar.
7. Assessments: This course contains eight Unit Assessments, one to be completed at the end of each unit.
Assessments for Units I, IV, VI, and VII are composed of written response questions to be completed directly in
Blackboard. Assessments for Units II, III, V, and VIII are composed of Case Studies from the course textbook and
are to be submitted to Blackboard as file responses.
8. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units II, III, V, VII, and VIII.

Unit VII Case Study
Read “Individual Rehabilitation Services (IRS)” on pages 442-444 and complete the problem on page 443 using the data
provided below it.
Unit VIII Problem Solving
Solve problems 14-10, 14-11, and 14-12 found on pages 554-557 of your textbook.
Submitting Course Paper/Projects
To submit your completed assignments upload to Blackboard using the “Case Study” link located in Units II, III, V and VIII.
Do not e-mail your paper directly to your professor. By uploading your assignment into Blackboard, your university
record will automatically be updated to indicate you have submitted your paper and the paper will be provided to your

APA Guidelines

paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed. A document titled “APA Guidelines Summary” is available

sites that provide comprehensive information on APA formatting, including examples and sample papers.
CSU Grading Rubric for Papers/Projects
The course papers will be graded based on the CSU Grading Rubric for all types of papers. In addition, all papers will be
submitted for electronic evaluation to rule out plagiarism. Course projects will contain project specific grading criteria
