Level II

Assess the effects of prophylactic azithromycin on cough-specific health statuses in COPD patients with chronic productive cough over the course of three months. Single-center parallel group randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial 84 adults > 40 years of age with COPD GOLD stage > 2 and chronic productive cough.

Azithromycin therapy group (n=42) and placebo group (n=42)

Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ)

St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ)

Intention-to-treat analysis.

Log-rank test.

Kaplan-Meier curves.

Chi-square tests.

ANCOVA analysis.

LCQ scores improved significantly in azithromycin group participants with low baseline scores 1.3 + 0.5 (95% CI 0.3; 2.3, p=0.001). Exacerbation frequency was reduced in azithromycin group.

Level III

Examine effects of multivitamin supplements on cognitive function, serum homocysteine level, and depression Quasi-experimental pretest-postest control group 48 adults > 65 years with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)

Intervention group (n=24); Control group (n=24)

Serum homocysteine levels

Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form Korean Version (GDSSF-K)

Mini Mental State Examination-Korean (MMSE-K)

Two group t test

Fisher’s exact test

Intervention group had significantly increased cognitive function  compared to control group (F=3.624, p=.021); significant decrease serum homocysteine level (F=6.974, p=.001) compared to control group; and significant alleviation of depression (F=10.849, p=.001) compared to control group
