Family Structures Essay – NRS-429 Topic 2 DQ 1
What is a definition of family that encompasses the different family structures prevalent today? Discuss the importance of acknowledging nontraditional family structures. Explain how family systems theory can be used to better understand the interactions of a modern family (traditional or nontraditional).
Over time, the definition and notion of family formations have changed (and will continue to evolve). Each step of progression illustrates the society’s efforts to accommodate new interests and groups as family members. Sue Z. Green’s definition of family best incorporates the many family arrangements widespread today, in my opinion. According to Green, a family is often a complex, varied, and dynamic entity, typically comprising of parents and children connected by legal, genetic, or emotional connections (Jabbari & Rouster, 2021) Family Structures Essay – NRS-429 Topic 2 DQ 1. No longer are bloodline and genetics the primary criteria of family membership. The definition of a family has been shaped by the complexity and variety of society, as well as by individual tastes and lifestyles.
The family is a microcosm of society; unconventional family patterns mirror societal characteristics. The nontraditional family structures should be acknowledged and respected when addressing issues pertaining to individual family members, because family members share characteristics that bind them together; therefore, they should not be treated in isolation, as what affects one member affects the others Family Structures Essay – NRS-429 Topic 2 DQ 1. For example, when planning to provide health education to a patient with the goal of effecting behavioral change, other family members should be included because the ill health of one person affects other family members and the Patient’s compliance with the education is greatly influenced by family members. The theory of family systems has played an important role in teaching the public about the evolution of the family structure throughout the years (Weiss-Laxer et al., 2020). The awareness and comprehension generated by the ideas have facilitated communication inside and beyond the family circle. Family Structures Essay – NRS-429 Topic 2 DQ 1 Another important advantage of understanding family structures through the family theories (traditional or nontraditional) is that it encourages the healthcare team to take a holistic approach when addressing the healthcare needs of patients. If a patient is fully understood as an important member of the family, as well as the emotional ties he/she has with his/her family members, this will guide the healthcare team in customizing a plan of care that will reflect these pecuiarities.

What is a definition of family that encompasses the different family structures prevalent today? Discuss the importance of acknowledging nontraditional family structures. Explain how family systems theory can be used to better understand the interactions of a modern family
The definition of a family that encompasses different family structures is the extended family since it extends beyond the nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, children, uncles, aunts, grandparents, and other members (Williams & Baker, 2021). The extended family consists of more than one family structure and is composed of many members, unlike the nuclear family, which only has three family members, the father, mother, and children Family Structures Essay – NRS-429 Topic 2 DQ 1.
For many reasons, it is essential to acknowledge the importance of nontraditional family structures. First, people may picture a family structure differently, and what one person may view as a family structure would be different from what the other may view as a family structure. It is, therefore, essential to recognize and acknowledge the different forms of family structures that exist in the modern world (Williams & Baker, 2021). Family Structures Essay – NRS-429 Topic 2 DQ 1 Acknowledging different nontraditional family structures helps offers children security, protection, and control in the modern world, which is full of uncertainty. Children have been the victims of family issues ranging from family structures and family roles and responsibilities of members (Williams & Baker, 2021). Recognizing the nontraditional family strictures will therefore offer children an advantage. This will also help create healthy habits that may last into adulthood. Acknowledging nontraditional families may also help the family members who belong to such families to feel fairly treated and recognized in the current society.
Family systems theory focuses on the exchange of behaviors that occur in a particular interaction between family members. The family system theory can help establish a series of natural interactions within and between families that build cohesion and stability (Erdem & Safi, 2018). Family Structures Essay – NRS-429 Topic 2 DQ 1 The theory can be used to differentiate a person from the family as a whole; the theory can also be used to understand the emotional system regulating the family structure. The family system theory can also be used to study how various modern family members relate to each other and the associations that exist between the different family members.
