NURS 6501: Interprofessional Organizational and Systems Leadership

 Personal Leadership Philosophy

I subscribe to the words of John Wooden, a famous American basketball player and coach, who once said the most influential leadership tool one has is their own example. I believe in steering a team by example. My leadership philosophy has played a central role in my approach to nursing practice and in working with others as it has allowed me to be consistent in my management actions and behaviors, control my reactions to situations, understand my values, and remain accountable. While I am not an appointed leader, I tend to take up a leadership role in projects when others hesitate and my colleagues seek advice whenever they brace challenges in their routine activities. I am looking forward to attaining my Family Nurse Practitioner certification upon graduation, implying that I will be leading medical teams in the formulation of treatment and management plans for a diversity of patient populations; therefore, I seek to improve my clinical reasoning and governance skills Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies.

My personal leadership has seven core values. I believe that an effective nurse leader honors trust, is always respectful, and works hard to accomplish their goals and inspire others to follow the organizational dream. I remain composed and persistent during difficulties; I consider every experience as a learning opportunity, whether at the personal or clinical level; and I value the process of communication from speaking, writing, and listening. Therefore, I strive to lead by example by role modeling the above values and setting an unspoken example in every task that I undertake, including communication style, dressing code, time management, and prioritizing my well-being to reduce the risk of burnout. The above is in line with the findings of Mudallal et al. (2017) study that sought to examine the impact of leader empowering behaviors, demographic traits, and work conditions on nurse burnout. From the above article, it is apparent that enhancing the meaningfulness of work through such leadership behaviors as infusing staff’s tasks with purpose and assigning meaning to individual contributions elevates nurses’ sense of worth and inspires them (Mudallal et al., 2017). Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies I identify with the transformational leadership approach, which according to Lin et al. (2017) contributes substantially to supervisor support. As a transformational leader, I will stimulate my followers to share my vision of being the leading L&D unit by fostering evidence-based maternal and childcare services in the hospital. My mission is to create and steer strong clinical teams that provide patient-centered care and guarantee patient safety in our hospital.

The five most dominant themes of talent from my StrengthsFinder Assessment are input, individualization, relator, strategic, and leaner (Gallup Access, n.d.). What makes me stand out in the input theme is the ability to seek out innovative ideas and plans of visionary people and apply them make mental leaps into the expected future. Within the individualization talent, I am intrigued with the distinctive qualities of individuals enabling me to strike conversations with others with the core purpose of understanding their hopes, successes, goals, experiences, talents, interests, and strengths. Within the strategic theme, I employ language and vocabulary to express innovative ideas and alternative ways to resolve a problem in a team setup. As a talented learner, I have a great desire to learn and continuously improve myself, and lastly, as a talented relator, I find satisfaction in establishing close relationships and working hard with others to accomplish a set goal (Gallup Access, n.d.). Based on the results of my StrengthsFinder, the two core values I would like to strengthen are the capacity to influence and communicate effectively with others. The capacity to communicate effectively is a fundamental skill for nurse leaders. According to Jankelová and  Joniaková (2021), effective communication and influencing skills enable nurse leaders to create and promote positive work environments associated with improved patient outcomes and high staff satisfaction. Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies I intend to hone my communication and influencing skills by watching videos, observing my mentors, and attending workshops and seminars on the above subject areas.
